To ensure that young people experience good quality Scouting, The Scout Association requires each adult in Scouting to demonstrate a range of knowledge, skills and attitudes that are relevant to their Scouting role. Adult Training is the training provided for adults to gain these.
The range of skills that The Scout Association expects of people in different roles are described in a number of modules, which together make up the Adult Training Scheme. Each role within Scouting requires a different selection of the modules on offer to be completed. The modules necessary for different roles in Scouting are outlined on the Training Modules page of this website.
In 1919, Baden-Powell started a formal system for Leader Training at Gilwell Park, near London. Those who completed the course were awarded the 'Wood Badge'. This was not a cloth badge, but a pair of beads from the ceremonial necklace of the Zulu chief, Dinizulu.
Although the beads from that original necklace are no longer used, Leaders throughout the world still continue the tradition of the Wood Badge, and are awarded two wooden beads on a necklace which is worn around the neckerchief in recognition that an Adult has completed the formal training necessary for the role they have in Scouting. Leaders are also enrolled as members of the 1st Gilwell Park Scout Group, and can wear the distinctive scarf and woggle.
More information on the origins of the Wood Badge can be found in the factsheet The Origins of the Wood Badge.
