Unit Activities 2011

Below you can find out what the Unit got up to in 2011:

6 New Members Invested Underwater!

6 New Unit members and 1 Leader were invested Underwater during a try-dive session with the Wight Dolphins Scuba Club at the UKSA Pool on 2nd March.  These new investitures trebled the size of the Unit!

This is the third time that the Unit have taken part in try-dive sessions with the Wight Dolphins over the last couple of years, an activity which has proved popular with the Explorers.

Red Nose Day 2011

The Unit achieved its goal of Climbing Mont Blanc using the Stairs at County Hall on Wednesday 23rd March. 10 Unit members completed 380 ascents of the stairs (to the 5th Floor) reaching a height of 4864 metres!

Each team member climbed the stairs at least 37 times! The fastest in 45 minutes and the slowest in 1hr 15 minutes!!

The Unit rasied a combined total of £461.50 for Comic Relief! Well done everyone, and thank you to our sponsors.

IOW Practice Expedition

The Unit have just completed their practice expedition in preparation for the Summer Expedition in Dorset.  This involved them carrying all of their equipment and food with them for the 3 day 2 night expedition on foot.

8 members of the Unit hiked in 2 teams from Newport to Northwood, staying overnight at Northwood HQ on the Friday night.  They woke and left early on the Saturday morning making their way to Corf for the night where they stayed before heading back to Newport on the Sunday.

The expedition went well, and everyone finished.  This was the first such event for several of the Unit members, who did not realize how much of a challenge it would be!  They should be very proud of their achievements this weekend, and look forward to their summer expedition at the end of July.

Xtreme at Gilwell 24

8 Unit members and 1 Leader have just returned from the National Explorer Scout Event Gilwell 24.  The Unit joined 16 other Explorers and Leaders from Vectis Vanguard and Vectis Caulkheads ESU's for the Event.

Gilwell 24 is an annual event held at Gilwell Park, the National Scout Headquarters and Activity Centre.

The event, as the name suggests, involves 24 hours of activities starting at 0900 on the Saturday morning, going through the night to 0900 on the Sunday.  The Explorers took part in a large number of events that were on offer including abseiling, archery, shooting, high ropes course, swimming, diving, orienteering, late night films, 3G swing, Disco, crate stacking, assault course and many, many more...

The Unit decided very quickly that they would like to return to the event in 2012!

Dorset Expedition

4 Unit members have just completed a 3 day and 2 night Expedition in Dorset.  The group carried all of their kit and food on their backs for the 3 days, covering on average 8-10 miles a day.

The group traveled down to Weymouth on the Friday evening, eating a fish and chip supper on Chessel Beach before staying overnight in a Scout HQ.

The Expedition started on the Saturday morning, with the group starting out from a viewpoint to the west of Weymouth.  They hiked to the Wareham and Isle of Purbeck District Campsite for their first night which happened to be right next door to Camp Bestival!  The group enjoyed the evening entertainment from the edge of the adjacent woodland, and enjoyed the opportunity for a large campfire!

The second day saw them hiking to Buddens which is the Dorset County Scout Campsite, via Bindon Abbey which was their project for the Expedition.

On their last day the group hiked to the outskirts of Wareham to be picked up and driven home!  The group did extremely well, only encountering the leaders on 3 occasions for condition checks.  This was an opportunity to prove what they can do, and do it well, they should be very proud of themselves and their achievement.

Climbing at Little Canada

The Unit enjoyed an evening of Climbing and Bouldering on the indoor climbing wall at Little Canada in Wootton this evening, whilst being entertained by some school parties murdering some well known songs at a Karaoke competition!

More Investitures on the water at the Unit Winter Camp

The Unit invested 4 more of its members in the Canadian Canoe on Corf Lake yesterday during their Winter Camp, bringing their total membership to 19! (not bad considering this time last year there was only 3 of them!!).

The Unit camped in the Pack Holiday Centre at Corf for the Halloween Weekend, enjoying a variety of activities which included backwoods cooking, archery, kayaking & canoeing, hiking, pumpkin carving and watching scary movies!  11 of the Unit members took part in the weekend, 4 of whom were invested on the water on the Saturday.

The Unit was fortunate with the weather despite the forecast, with only the Camp Fire on the Saturday evening not taking place.  The Unit braved the drizzle on Sunday for their short hike!

Our thanks go to Lizzie for running the Archery and Trevor & Toby for coming along to run the water activities for us.

Children in Need 2011

On Friday 18th November the Unit spent the evening into the early hours of Saturday morning baking and decorating cakes and biscuits at the Scout HQ.  They then sold these Cakes and Biscuits as well as washing Cars on the Saturday Morning.

The Unit raised the grand sum of £160 for Children In Need - well done everyone!
