Scouts were first seen in Godshill in 1949 when the Reverend Mason started the Troop. Meetings were in the Village Hall. The colour of the Scarf worn by the Scouts at the time was green and black. When the Reverend Mason decided to pass the Leadership over, three years later, no-one could be found to run the Troop so it was disbanded.
In 1979 a Cub Pack was opened, meeting at the Village School, and a while later a Scout Troop. The Troops claim to fame is that it was the first on the Island to take in girls.
The Troop again folded due to lack of Leaders, ran briefly for two years around 2000 then suffered an 11 year gap until being reopened again in 2011.
The Group boasts one of the best Scout Headquarters on the Island, having been purpose built for Beavers, Cubs & Scouts. Fundraising for it started in 1980 and the land (part of a field for the use of the village children) was bought from the Parish Council. Work finally began in 1986 and the structure of the building was started in 1987. The outside was completed in September 1988 but it wasn’t until September 1989 that is was first used.
