Hello everyone,

Here’s an update for March from Paul, Mandy, Ali, MaC and the Corf Management Team. Much of this informatrion has been sent out via the email pyramid, but we’d like to make sure that everyone sees all of this as it’s pretty important!

County Commissioners Message for March

March has arrived a lot of news to pass on.

Firstly, I must congratulate Lucy Hole a Cub Scout with 8th Newport. Last year she dove into a deep swimming pool when she realised her little brother had sunk to the bottom. She was able to save him, and Mandy and I were very proud to award her a medal the Chief Scout’s Commendation for Meritorious Conduct.

Well done too to the Beavers and Cubs that took part in the hike starting and finishing at 1st Northwood Scout Hall. Lots of badge work covered with few hours of extra work from the section leaders

Our census figures were submitted with a fall in our numbers and we will have a look to see which groups might need some support to boost numbers. Inevitably it comes down to the availability of adult volunteers. There is a session at the Leaders weekend (30th and 31st March) on ideas for adult recruitment being run by the regional team. Please come along or get anyone (can be a parent) to listen. The weekend has lots to offer so please check out what is on offer. You can come for one session or the whole weekend. All food is provided.

My proposal in having One Island as a support structure and taking away the districts is taking shape with a Uniform structure attached here. The idea is to have a team that is thinking about the way forward all working together for you. The team would work towards certain themes of the strategy but doesn’t mean they are working in silos, cooperation across the themes is crucial. I am meeting the ADCs and Exec members on 22nd March to see what the next steps might be. I will keep you posted. Thank you to those of you who have written to me with support for the proposal or with concerns.

St George’s day is fast approaching.  This year is the more formal event. On 28th April we will be renewing our promise together at All Saints Church Ryde. A static Parade will take place at Ryde School before we move to the church accompanied by Wight Diamonds. Full details have been circulated by DC Mandy Holloway (see below)

On 23rd April we will be at Corf to rededicate the Altar at 6.45pm all are welcome.

I am now into a countdown to hand over the Island Commissioner role in July. A search panel is being held by Ian Newbery and has three Islanders helping-Ali Burt, Alan Tiller and Andy Hollebon.

I also need to set up a search panel for a new West Wight DC as Mandy has reached the incredible 10-year milestone and is not able to continue. Whilst I appreciate the role could change if the One Island proposal goes ahead next year, we need to find someone suitable asap. If you would like to help me on the search panel, please let me know by the Sunday of leader’s camp.

Looking forward to seeing you all soon at the various events. If you enjoyed the concert by the Band of the Hampshire Constabulary last year please come along again at 2.30pm on Sunday 7th April at All Saints Church, Ryde

Thanks
YIS
Paul

PL Camp

Mandy and Ali asked me to remind you of the County PL Camp and to tell you that it’s also open to APLs too! Application forms are here in  Word   or  PDF formats . Forms must be returned as soon as possible.

Website

We’re changing the website (again). We’ve been using “Scout Websites” to provide a semi-custom website framework for or county website for nearly 2 years. Yes, it’s taken us to another level of professionalism, but for a small county it works out as quite an expensive solution. Now Webmaster Alan Tiller is rebuilding the site, with a bit of help from me. Some of the main aims of the new site are to make it easier for anyone to edit a webpage (and submit it for approval) and to include more Scouting management features. Let us know if you can think of features we can add to help you.

We’d really like to get the views of people in Isle of Wight Scouts and what you want your website to do in this quick questionnaire. Visit: https://goo.gl/forms/2vqfv9DKhBHVr3wK2 – Thanks!

Camping Pages

You may not have noticed, but our “Camping” section of the website includes not only Corf Campsite, but also Godshill HQ. If you hire out your HQ or grounds, know of a Scout-friendly spot to camp, or can recommend something for visitors to the Island to do please let us know to add details.

Essex International Jamboree

Ali is asking for anyone interested in going to EIJ20 (Essex International Jamboree 2020) to get in touch with her quickly. (Julie and I have worked on the support team twice – it’s a brilliant event). Information files here in Word  or  PDF  format.

Leaders Weekend

Remember to register for Leaders weekend ( this year incorporating our IsleShape 2019 conference) on 30/31 March (I’ll be running a branding/media course on Sunday).

Your Corf Responsibilities

You should all have received a mail from the Corf management team about our individual and collective responsibilities at Corf Camp. Please read it carefully as the details in the mail are part of a legal requirement which County has accepted ON YOUR BEHALF. If you’ve not received the files, they’re all here:  Corf Letter to all March 19    Corf Assistance request Mar 19    CCF3 CORF WARDENs ASSISTANCE    CCF2 Corf Seasonal Maintenance Tasks    CCF1 Corf Site Proposal Form    SSSI Leaflet Mar 19

Media Training

On a personal level, I’m changing to a job in Southampton, so I’ll be home every evening. If anyone would like me to run an evening Media training course for your Group, then let me know. I can run 1, 2 or 3 hour courses.

Wight Rovers Media Team

We’re looking for new Wight Rovers Media Team members to help us promote IW Scouts. Please let me know if you or any of your Scouts are interested in joining the team.

St Georges Day

To celebrate St. George’s Day, we have organised two services for you to attend.

On Tuesday 23rd April, Reverend Amanda Collinson our County Chaplain will be rededicating the altar at Corf with a short service for St George’s day at 6.45pm, all welcome.

Our County St. George’s Day service will be held in All Saints Church, Ryde, on Sunday 28th April. All groups to arrange their own drop off and collection point in the area.

Please congregate on Ryde Private School field at 2pm, off of Queens Road on the left hand side towards the traffic lights heading for Ryde from Newport, and before the schools new building. The band will play whilst we form up, and will escort us to the church. Our church service will take place at 3pm, so we need everyone seated in the church by 2.45pm. Our County Chaplain Rev’d Amanda Collinson will be leading the service. Please process your section flags whilst we walk from the field to the church, with the band.

After the service, leaders are requested to walk the young people back to their drop off point, where they can be collected at 4pm.

If you have any queries regarding any of the above, do not hesitate to contact Paul Savill, Mandy Holloway or Ali Burt.

Please let one of us know if you need accessible parking.

We look forward to seeing you there.

Please take the survey – we really need your input…..

Hi all,

Please can you take ten mins to complete the really important Scout Experience Survey!

If you haven’t completed the Scout Experience Survey yet then please do as this helps inform changes and improvements to both our adult volunteer and young people’s journeys and experiences. http://www.scouts.org.uk/scoutsurvey2019

Please also encourage as many young people over 10 and parents to have their say! #youthshaped

Kind regards

Ali
