I expect you all know that Ali Burt is the new East Wight District Commissioner. Our new Wight Rovers Media Team member Zac from 2nd Ryde met up with her….
While attending the East Wight Beavers district BBQ, I met up with the new District Commissioner – Ali Burt. I took the opportunity to find out a little more about her and what she brings to the area.
Congratulations, how does it feel to be the new district commissioner?
Thank you, I feel very excited about the opportunity I have been given.
Can you tell me a little about your history in scouting?
When my son joined Beavers, the group was threatened with closure as they were short of leaders and helpers so I became a parent helper. Soon after, as my son enjoyed it so much, I became an Assistant Beaver Leader to help the group stay open which I thoroughly enjoyed. A few years later, I offered to also support the Scouts section as they were in need of helpers. Following this, I was then asked to step up to be Assistant Group Scout Leader for the group and so I dropped my Beaver leadership as this section now had sufficient leaders. Following on from this last year, I began assisting the county team with training and also became a night’s away assessor. When I was asked to apply for district commissioner this year, I happily applied.
What can you bring to our district?
I think I bring the enthusiasm to bring positive changes where needed and promote young people within our groups. As a teacher, I also bring experience and knowledge from working with children.
What part of the role are you looking forward to the most?
I am looking forward to getting out and meeting all the local groups, to see what great opportunities they already experience. As well as getting to know all the young people and the leaders and finding out how they would like their scouting to be shaped in the future.
Thank you Ali for taking the time to let us get to know you a little better
Thanks Zac, that’s brilliant – nice questions!
The next time we’ll see Zac will be at the Teddy Bears Picnic. I hope we’ll see you there too!
